MAMP, XAMP, WAMP and others are great tools to get folks up and running with local installations on their computers. But why learn the nuances of those applications when you can learn to use a Ubuntu server, the same kind of server your website will likely be deployed on*?

During this session we will cover the basics of running Virtbualbox with a Linux server on your local Windows and Mac (or Linux) machines.

We will review some of the community initiatives that can help get you setup including Drubuntu, Turnkey Linux and others. We will address installing ubunutu server locally and the cross-platform issues associated with connecting to your virtual machine.

In the second half we will cover some server basics including apache and mysql commands necesary for installing Drupal, package management with Ubuntu, connecting via ssh, and other server questions that arise. Finally I will try and sell everyone on using Vim!

If this session is small enough we might just try and do some troubleshooting or spend our time focussing on whatever attendees are most interested in. If there are folks who use a setup similar to this already it would be great to hear some personal tips or tricks.

It takes some time to download Virtualbox and Ubuntu server edition attendees should have those at least downloaded if they wish to set them up during the session.

*This concept works for Centos / Red Hat as well.
